ARTIST RESIDENCY :: ann ‘sole sister’ johnson :: MAKING IT::FINDING IT
ann johnson is a multi-disciplinary artist who works across mediums and techniques, including assemblage, archiving, and print-making on non-traditional materials like feathers and leaves. ann’s work thinks through materials and uses them as a language for resonances between place, history, inheritance, ancestry, and kin. Her work inspires us to find material and sensory dimensions in what might have otherwise existed to us only as stories.
ann’s sculptural assemblages explore notions of commemoration, process, and what it means to “make it” in sports and beyond. Some of her BLING CATCHERS are apotropaic, averting the physical and mental toll of athletics. Some are visual odes to childhood dreams and to athletic expression in collegiate and professional sports. Together, they collect distinct ways we share a love for the game.
