VISCERA::POETICS is Tehran-born, Minneapolis-based artist, Ziba Rajabi’s short-term artist residency at Princeton University. Rajabi is a painter focusing primarily on site-specific installations, textiles, and reimaginations of digital mediation in contemporary life. She will first lead participants through a multi-sensory, participatory “non-verbal poetry” workshop. Instead of words, we will use visual and tactile materials to compose visual poems from the rich visual dictionary Ziba will provide consisting of pre-cut shapes, colors, sizes, textures, and materials. On Friday afternoon, we will also host a public conversation with Ziba and the::sense::archive founding director, Ava Shirazi, about Ziba’s process, poetics, and the sensory dimensions of accessing the visceral.

WET::DRY::STITCH is a series of multi-sensory programs following the art practice of Shannon Alonzo. Shannon will first lead a participatory workshop exploring mark-making on muslin, washing work, and how hands think. Shannon will next curate “Iron and Steel,” an edition of VCAMbient paying homage to the rhythms of Trinidad and Tobago, from the pan yard to the calypso tent, from the carnival road to the backyard jam. Last, Shannon will lead a student-focused workshop asking students to build on Tuesday night’s palmipsest through stitching new meanings into our marked, washed, marked muslin. Our collaborative fabric-marking/washing works will be exhibited as a temporary site-specific installation throughout the week in VCAM.

RESONANCES is a series of multi-sensory, participatory workshops following Raúl Romero’s art practice. Over the course of his residency, we explored sound as a material force. Raúl invited us to be open to the material aliveness of sound and its multiple energies, stories. His installations theorized sound through physical contact, circuitry, texture, and materiality. He showed us there were archives inherent in vibrations that can be sensed when attuned to his practice. Raúl led us across copper, acrylic, and walnut, infused with the sounds of Bad Bunny, coquis, Tito Puente, and drumfish— all to feel the resonance between the Arecibo satellite dish, the first sounds and sonic codes sent into outer space, and the Poconos mountain ranges.
